The starting point for my solo-exhibition in Koraalberg Gallery was an idea Gordon Matta-Clark proposed in 1977 for a building in Antwerp, but that was never carried out ( instead he realised Office Baroque). The building where Koraalberg Gallery is situated, used to house the NICC (Nieuw Internationaal Cultureel Centrum), an artists' initiative, which started from a protest against the closing of the ICC, the International Cultural Centre, that had invited Gordon Matta-Clark to Antwerp in the seventies. My installation in the gallery should be seen as an interpretation of, as well as an elaboration on Matta-Clark’s proposal. With this installation I investigated the history of the gallery space as well as the origins of the contemporary art institutions in Antwerp, starting with the turbulent debate that arose after the attempt to save Matta-Clarks work and its later destruction.
